Understanding the Astro-Grid
How to Read the Astro-Grid
Astrological compatibility (synastry) is based on the angular relationships (aspects) between the planets in two people's birth charts. The Astro-Grid™ places your planets across the top and the other person's planets down the left side. Wherever two planets intersect, if the aspect between them is significant to compatibility, a Compatibility Score appears. The higher the score, the more favorable that interaction is in the specific area of life involved. Click on any Score to read the interpretation for that aspect. Click View/Print Report at the top of the grid to view all of the individual interpretations collected into a single document.
What the Symbols Mean
- Top left: Symbols for the two planets being compared (theirs/yours).
- Top right: Symbol for the aspect between the planets (when significant).
- Bottom left: House and zodiac sign containing their planet.
- Bottom right: House and zodiac sign containing your planet.
- Center: Compatibility Score assigned to the aspect. Click the score to read the interpretation.
How Compatibility Scores Are Calculated
This site focuses on the five major aspects that are most important in relationship compatibility.
- Conjunction: Planets are close together. Generally favorable.
- Sextile: About 60° apart. Favorable creative energies.
- Square: About 90° apart. Challenges created by conflicting approaches.
- Trine: About 120° apart. Smooth-flowing, harmonious energies.
- Opposition: About 180° apart. Energies pulling in opposite directions.
Favorable aspects receive higher scores and challenging aspects receive lower scores. The scores are also determined by how important the aspects are in terms of compatibility. For example, the aspects between the Sun (inner self) and Moon (how emotions are processed) are much more important than how Mercury (communication) and Uranus (freedom) interact, although all planetary interactions contribute to compatibility.
Why Planetary Patterns Matter
Compatibility between two people depends largely on shared interests, similar approaches to life, compatible value systems and complementary personality traits. The positions of the planets in each person's natal chart strongly influence these characteristics. By comparing the planetary patterns in two birth charts, astrological synastry can identify the areas in which two people are naturally likely to support one another—and the areas where challenges are most likely to arise.
